Horizon 1: Exploring
Apologize for the long delay. Some of you have been kind enough to ask when I will post again. Work has been quite demanding and it definitely crept up on me. Will do my best to stay on point. Regardless…
I’ve known quite a few people staying indefinitely in Horizon 1. In this case, getting basic ear/eye protection such as, $5 range glasses, foam ear plugs ($5), and utilizing the OEM case in which your pistol came (Free) will be suffice. A critical item that you should not skimp on is your pistol holster. I would recommend going with Outside the Waistband (OWB) holsters for now, rather than increasing your learning curve and going with Inside the Waistband (IWB) or Appendix (AIWB) holsters. Learn how to draw consistently before drawing from concealment.
In this case, there is honestly really only one viable option in the market if you want retention that is natural to the draw. The Safariland ALS with their belt clip or Tek Lok ($70-100) is one that comes to mind. I would highly recommend some retention since there really isn’t any downside with the ALS system. If you don’t want retention, which again I would encourage you to reconsider, then there are 4-5 holster companies that you can buy with confidence: T-Rex Arms, We the People Holster, Tier 1 Conceal, and Vedder Holsters. I would definitely stand firm on not using the “Serpa” holster that requires you to draw using your trigger finger to engage a latch. Training can definitely overcome this flawed motion, but frankly why go with some unsafe design that is old and has now seen better alternatives.
Lastly, you will need to purchase a double magazine holster with belt clip that can be attached onto your belt ($20-25). Bladetech and Uncle Mike’s make great budget friendly options; just make sure the mag holster is compatible with your pistol magazine (single vs. double stack). In total, this Horizon 1 will cost you an additional $100-135 to get started. These items even if you move to other Horizons can be reused for training or staging your gear. So no wasting here!
Some may argue that medical training is not necessary during this initial Horizon. However, given that you would more likely to use this skillset than you would otherwise, I would recommend to start taking classes now. I would also include a CAT tourniquet in your kit ($30).
